Climate Rescue

The science is clear. We have a short amount of time to drastically lower greenhouse gas emissions before global warming becomes irreversible. All around the world people are already feeling the effects of global warming, and scientists have predicted further dire consequences of warming to come.

Global warming is not just an opportunity- it’s a test. It’s a test to see if we can shake off our rose-tinted, consumerist glasses and rise to a level of responsibility and leadership. The United States is the second leading country in greenhouse gas emissions and first in per capita emissions. It’s the tragedy of the commons, friends. We all share one fragile, spaceship Earth, and no governments or borders can change the fact that we breathe the same air, share the same water and call this planet our only home.

We have two options. We can let big industry continue to destroy our planet for their profit and hope the climate will hold out long enough for us to carve out careers and live our lives. Or we can fight for clean, cheap, renewable energy and a safe climate for ourselves, our fellow earthlings and for future generations. UNCW ECO is working with Greenpeace on the Climate Rescue campaign to address global warming by 1) pressuring President Obama to enact science-based legislation that will present the United States as a leader in climate policy at the UN Copenhagen Climate Conference, 2) negotiating at Copenhagen on the basis of the findings of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, and 3) investing in clean and renewable energy and divesting from coal, oil and gas.

Please join us in this fight of our lives. For more information about ECO’s work on Climate Rescue, contact Vanessa.
